Jakova) — a building unlike almost any other in Europe, because it was built entirely of stone, with no mortar and no wood. Its best-loved detail is the exterior frieze of 71 stone heads, each portraying the face of an ordinary local from the period. It’s worth walking the whole way around the cathedral to study them one by one — this is one of the most photographed details in all of Dalmatia.
St Michael’s Fortress above the rooftops
St Michael’s Fortress stands guard over Šibenik, and from its walls the view opens across the old-town rooftops, the St Anthony Channel and the nearby island archipelago. The easiest approach is to set off in the morning, park outside the historic centre (the old town is largely closed to traffic) and continue on foot.
